Update On Links

March 18, 2013 - I'm now using various file sites with varying success. With over 200 albums listed here, obviously I cannot upload everything at once. So if you're dying to hear something, please post a comment on that particular post and I will move it up in the priority queue. Enjoy!

Get Out Get Under The Moon

Annette Hanshaw was one of the great jazz singers of the 1920s and 1930s, rivaling other such as Ruth Etting in popularity. Her records featured musicians such as Red Nichols, Miff Mole, Phil Napoleon, Joe Venuti, Eddie Lang, Adrian Rollini, Vic Berton, Benny Goodman, Jimmy Dorsey, Tommy Dorsey and Jack Teagarden. Like many other artists, her records were often released on other labels under a pseudonym such as Gay Ellis, for example, when the songs were more sentimental. Enjoy. +

I have some Chick Bullock recordings in good sound. Please contact me if you're interested.

I think there might be a couple of those I need, but will have to check my discography at home. The Classics Bunny Berigan 1935-1936 had several of these, however it seems they ripped the tunes from a 1960s LP set that had truncated some of the tunes (e.g., Swing, Mister Charlie is incomplete). I've no idea why anyone would cut Berigan's music! I'd love to get a clean, full version of that one for sure but I'll check tonight.

I am pretty sure I have that Hanshaw, plus two others but will confirm as well.

Thanks!

Arthur, if you're still out there and willing to share the JSP material I'd love to get that. Thanks!

It's good to hear an entire Annette Hanshaw compilation without the "baby talk"/Betty Boop schtick!Thank you!

Chester Proudfoot said...

Yeah, I could do without the "that's all" on so many sides, but overall I think her music rises above the schtick nonetheless. This reminds me, I have to post my Helen Kane sometime.

I'm more familial with the early 1930's Hanshaw songs. These are from 1926-27-28. I think she had a wonderful naturel voice. I'm new to your place and I think I will spend a lot of time here. I had my own little musical blog for songs of the 78 RPM era. I present one song at a time, in rotation (Gone after 6 weeks!). My presentations are in French, but most of the songs are in English. I added your place to my links. If you want to drop by, you're welcome :

Bienvenue, Mario. Ils sont tes propres 78s?

Mario B said...

No | There's no 78 RPM at my place : only compact discs collection and some tracks I found on the internet.

mr. Volstead please reup this exellent album if possible. There is some good dixie band sound in contrast with more frequent sweet accompaniment.

Done.

This collection includes five glorious examples of the chamber jazz style created by Joe Venuti and Eddie Lang, for this session joined by two other astonishing instrumentalists, Adrian Rollini on bass sax and Vic Berton on drums (including tympani!), all serving to give Annette Hanshaw the most stimulating accompaniment she ever received. It doesn't get better than this. (So far as I know, this is the only disc that includes all five songs from this session.)

This is ready to enjoy again.

There was another series that attempted a chronological order of her music, but I don't think they managed to finish. Now it's out of print, though I think I may have a digital copy of a couple of them. Sometimes they can be found on ebay.

The Sensation label from Toronto released three CDs of Annette Hanshaw:
Vol. 5 - 1928-1929
Vol. 6 - 1929
Vol. 7 - 1929-1930
The recordings with the Four Instrumental Stars were made June 21, 1927.

Hoyle Osborne said...

Yes. A Toronto company called Sensation Records volumes 5, 6 & 7 of a projected complete edition, and then went out of business. Those volumes cover the years 1928 to 1930, and do not include the sessions made with Four Instrumental Stars in 1927.

Chester Proudfoot said...

I have volumes 6 & 7, but can't tell what company issued them (flac files), courtesy of a blogger friend. I also have several (10 or so) cassettes from another collector, which I plan on digitizing at some point. They're probably in better condition than either my Dot Dare or Gay Ellis 78s.
