Accent On Swing

Recordings during Carter's European period (1935-1938) before he returned to the US to form two successful bands. From All Music: In 1935, Benny Carter moved to Europe, where in London he was a staff arranger for the BBC dance orchestra (1936-1938); he also recorded in several European countries. Carter's "Waltzing the Blues" was one of the very first jazz waltzes. Enjoy. +

If You Knew Susie

If you like the music of Eddie Cantor, this is a nice collection. The one title that seems to be missing is Makin' Whoopee from 1929, but maybe the producers figured people could find that anywhere? Still, it's a good set and includes alternate versions of When My Ship Comes In. Click on the cover for a larger image. Enjoy. + +

Anytime, Any Day, Anywhere

A nice collection of some of the leading male singers from the late 1920s into the 1940s. The packaging for this series was very nice, the booklet included a brief history of the Art Deco style as well as matrix numbers and recording dates for each of the tracks. For the sole tune by Lew Bray, the authors ask "Does anybody out there know anything about this Texas vocalist?" The second disc includes three tunes by Chick Bullock including a very nice version of Anytime, Any Day, Anywhere recorded by the ARC house band that included both Dorsey brothers and Joe Venuti for that session. Also, my favorite version of A Hundred Years From Today by Jack Teagarden. Enjoy. + +

Jig Time

This set includes the first recordings of Gene Kardos and His Orchestra. I have yet to pick up the next two volumes. The musicians are top-notch, but as for the songs there is this from the liner notes:
The tunes given Kardos to record were bright and bouncy, but rarely of lasting quality. Just as the band had become a favorite "try-out" group for publishers of stock arrangements, it now introduced several little-known tunes destined to stay that way. "A lot of the tunes we recorded weren't exactly popular," said Red Hymie. "I think Eli Oberstein, the A&R guy at Victor, was being 'paid off' to get these tunes recorded. .... We did 'em, but....." If some songs remain obscure, they're still rendered with enthusiasm by the Kardos crew, which now had Nat Brown on trombone instead of Jules Harrison, and saxophonist Pete Salemi replacing Milt Small. With its second session, the Kardos band had found its true sound and line-up, which would remain intact through the band's tenure at Victor. Enjoy. +

This compilation includes Hoagy Carmichael's first recording of Stardust (instrumental) from 1927 and his sixth recording of the same tune in 1942. This series was produced by France Telecom Foundation, and included cds of Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, Lena Horne, Lee Wiley, the Boswell Sisters and more. I don't know if the series continued after volume 18 or not. Enjoy. +
